A standard STAR WARS Zero Company deployment contains four operators. Your full roster is larger: capacity begins at seven and can expand to twenty. These limits answer different questions—how many you bring to a battle, and how many the company can retain between battles.

Four in the field, more in reserve
The four-operator figure describes the normal tactical squad. Some missions give you additional characters to control, so it is not a claim that every encounter always contains exactly four friendly units. Follow the mission’s deployment conditions rather than planning around an exception as the default.
The larger company roster provides alternatives for roles, equipment and recovery. Expanding capacity does not mean that all twenty operators can be sent into an ordinary battle. It means you have a deeper pool from which to choose the active team.

When Hawks must deploy
Hawks accompanies story missions. Skirmishes can allow you to leave Hawks out and try another lineup. If Hawks dies during a mission, the mission fails and must be restarted; this is not handled like an ordinary reserve member’s permanent loss.
When planning a story team, account for Hawks before choosing the remaining operators. When a mission allows a different lineup, you have more freedom to test a specialized group. Always check the current mission restrictions rather than assuming one deployment screen applies everywhere.

Story operators, recruits and astromechs
The company mixes authored characters with custom recruits. Story operators have individual backgrounds and talents, while recruitment lets you fill gaps in the roster. Astromechs become available through campaign progression and Droid Bay support. Separatist battle droids are not recruitable.
A droid-heavy team is possible where mission restrictions permit it. It does not remove Hawks from a story mission that requires the protagonist. Similarly, custom recruitment does not add Jedi to the ordinary class selection; special operators follow separate identity rules.

Use reserves to keep the campaign moving
Regular Medbay treatment takes one Cycle, while Bacta can provide immediate healing. Keeping a reserve means you can consider a different operator while an injured member recovers instead of treating the same four as the only usable team.
Before deployment, compare health, role coverage and equipment across the available roster. This is a practical use of the documented recovery and recruitment systems, not a rule that you must rotate after every battle. The injury guide explains why the condition of an operator matters alongside squad size.
